اللَّهُمَّ بِكَ أَصْبَحْنَا، وَبِكَ أَمْسَيْنَا، وَبِكَ نَحْيَا، وَبِكَ نَمُوتُ، وَإِلَيْكَ النُّشُورُ

Allāhumma bika aṣbaḥnā, wa bika amsaynā, wa bika naḥyā, wa bika namūtu, wa ilayka-n-nushūr

“O Allah, by You we enter the morning, by You we enter the evening, by You we live, by You we die, and to You is the resurrection.”

Why this dua says what it says

It places the whole day — waking, living, dying — inside one sentence, and hands all of it to Allah before anything else has happened.

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْعَافِيَةَ فِي الدُّنْيَا وَالْآخِرَةِ

Allāhumma innī as’aluka al-‘āfiyata fī-d-dunyā wa-l-ākhirah

“O Allah, I ask You for wellbeing in this world and the next.”

Why this dua says what it says

‘Āfiyah is a wide word — health, safety, being spared harm. Asking for it is asking to be kept whole, rather than asking for any one thing.

Narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) never failed to utter these supplications in the evening and in the morning: O Allah, I ask Thee for security in this world and in the Hereafter: O Allah! I ask Thee for forgiveness and security in my religion and my worldly affairs, in my family and my property; O Allah! conceal my fault or faults (according to Uthman's version), and keep me safe from the things which I fear; O Allah! guard me in front of me and behind me, on my right hand and on my left, and from above me: and I seek in Thy greatness from receiving unexpected harm from below me." AbuDawud said: Waki' said: That is to say, swallowing by the earth

Leaving the house

As you step out of the door.

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ، تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى اللَّهِ، وَلَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَّهِ

Bismillāh, tawakkaltu ‘ala-llāh, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh

“In the name of Allah. I place my trust in Allah. There is no power and no strength except with Allah.”

You are about to walk into a day you do not control. This says so plainly, and hands the outcome over before you meet it.

Hadith

Anas bin Malik narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:“Whoever says – that is: when he leaves his house – ‘In the Name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, there is no might or power except by Allah (Bismillāh, tawakkaltu `alallāh, lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh)’ it will be said to him: ‘You have been sufficed and protected,’ and Shaitan will become distant from him.”

Worry and hardship

For anxiety, grief and difficulty.

When something weighs on you

In anxiety, grief, or when you do not know what to do.

حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ

Ḥasbunā-llāhu wa ni‘ma-l-wakīl

“Allah is enough for us, and the best of guardians.”

Why this dua says what it says

This appears in the Quran as what was said by people who had just been told to be afraid. It is not a denial that the difficulty is real — it is a statement about who is holding it.

ٱلَّذِينَ قَالَ لَهُمُ ٱلنَّاسُ إِنَّ ٱلنَّاسَ قَدْ جَمَعُوا۟ لَكُمْ فَٱخْشَوْهُمْ فَزَادَهُمْ إِيمَـٰنًا وَقَالُوا۟ حَسْبُنَا ٱللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ ٱلْوَكِيلُ

Those to whom people [i.e., hypocrites] said, "Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them." But it [merely] increased them in faith, and they said, "Sufficient for us is Allāh, and [He is] the best Disposer of affairs."

When the heart is unsettled

Whenever you need to be reminded where calm comes from.

أَلَا بِذِكْرِ اللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ الْقُلُوبُ

Alā bi dhikri-llāhi taṭma’innu-l-qulūb

“Truly, it is in the remembrance of Allah that hearts find rest.”

Why this dua says what it says

Not a dua but a verse worth keeping close. It names where settledness actually comes from, which is often not where we look for it first.

Those who have believed and whose hearts are assured by the remembrance of Allāh. Unquestionably, by the remembrance of Allāh hearts are assured."

Protection

Seeking refuge and safety.

Seeking refuge

Before reciting the Quran, and whenever you feel pulled toward harm.

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

A‘ūdhu billāhi mina-sh-shayṭāni-r-rajīm

“I seek refuge with Allah from the accursed Shaytan.”

The Quran instructs this directly before recitation. Refuge is asked for, not claimed — the request itself is the protection.

فَإِذَا قَرَأْتَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ فَٱسْتَعِذْ بِٱللَّهِ مِنَ ٱلشَّيْطَـٰنِ ٱلرَّجِيمِ

So when you recite the Qur’ān, [first] seek refuge in Allāh from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy].

Trusting Allah with what you cannot see

When worry about the unknown takes hold.

وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ

Wa ‘ala-llāhi falyatawakkali-l-mu’minūn

“And upon Allah let the believers rely.”

Why this dua says what it says

Reliance here is not passivity. It is doing what you can, and then refusing to carry the part that was never yours to carry.

إِذْ هَمَّت طَّآئِفَتَانِ مِنكُمْ أَن تَفْشَلَا وَٱللَّهُ وَلِيُّهُمَا ۗ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ

When two parties among you were about to lose courage, but Allāh was their ally; and upon Allāh the believers should rely.

Forgiveness

Turning back to Allah.

The best way of seeking forgiveness

Morning and evening. Known as Sayyid al-Istighfār.

اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ رَبِّي لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ، خَلَقْتَنِي وَأَنَا عَبْدُكَ، وَأَنَا عَلَى عَهْدِكَ وَوَعْدِكَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُ، أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا صَنَعْتُ، أَبُوءُ لَكَ بِنِعْمَتِكَ عَلَيَّ، وَأَبُوءُ بِذَنْبِي فَاغْفِرْ لِي، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ إِلَّا أَنْتَ

Allāhumma anta Rabbī, lā ilāha illā anta, khalaqtanī wa anā ‘abduk, wa anā ‘alā ‘ahdika wa wa‘dika mā istaṭa‘t. A‘ūdhu bika min sharri mā ṣana‘t. Abū’u laka bi ni‘matika ‘alayya, wa abū’u bi dhanbī faghfir lī, fa innahu lā yaghfiru-dh-dhunūba illā ant.

“O Allah, You are my Lord. There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant, and I keep to Your covenant and promise as much as I am able. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your favour upon me, and I acknowledge my sin — so forgive me, for none forgives sins but You.”

Why this dua says what it says

Notice the order: who Allah is, who you are, an honest admission that you keep the covenant only "as much as I am able", and only then the request. It does not pretend you are better than you are.

Narrated by Shaddad bin Aus

The Prophet (ﷺ) said "The most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is: 'Allahumma anta Rabbi la ilaha illa anta, Khalaqtani wa ana `Abduka, wa ana `ala `ahdika wa wa`dika mastata`tu, A`udhu bika min Sharri ma sana`tu, abu'u Laka bini`matika `alaiya, wa abu'u laka bidhanbi faghfir lee fa innahu la yaghfiru adhdhunuba illa anta." The Prophet (ﷺ) added. "If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise

Simple istighfār

Any time. The Prophet ﷺ said this many times a day.

أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ

Astaghfiru-llāha wa atūbu ilayh

“I seek the forgiveness of Allah and I turn to Him.”

Why this dua says what it says

Short enough to say anywhere. The second half matters as much as the first — it is not only asking to be forgiven, but turning back.

I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying." By Allah! I ask for forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day

Family

For parents, spouse and children.

For your parents

Any time — and especially if they have passed away.

رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا

Rabbi irḥamhumā kamā rabbayānī ṣaghīrā

“My Lord, have mercy on them as they raised me when I was small.”

Why this dua says what it says

The Quran teaches this dua directly. The reasoning inside it is striking — mercy asked for, on the grounds of care already given.

Quran

وَٱخْفِضْ لَهُمَا جَنَاحَ ٱلذُّلِّ مِنَ ٱلرَّحْمَةِ وَقُل رَّبِّ ٱرْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِى صَغِيرًا

And lower to them the wing of humility out of mercy and say, "My Lord, have mercy upon them as they brought me up [when I was] small."

For your spouse and children

For the people closest to you.

رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَاجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

Rabbanā hab lanā min azwājinā wa dhurriyyātinā qurrata a‘yunin wa-j‘alnā li-l-muttaqīna imāmā

“Our Lord, grant us from among our spouses and offspring comfort to our eyes, and make us a leader for the righteous.”

Why this dua says what it says

“Comfort to our eyes” is an idiom for the kind of joy that settles you when you look at someone. The dua asks for that, and then asks to be worth following.

Quran

وَٱلَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَٰجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّـٰتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ وَٱجْعَلْنَا لِلْمُتَّقِينَ إِمَامًا

And those who say, "Our Lord, grant us from among our wives and offspring comfort to our eyes and make us a leader [i.e., example] for the righteous."

Dua is not restricted to set forms. Asking Allah in your own language, in your own words, is dua — and the Quran describes Him as near, and answering.
