Practice
Learn Salah
الصلاة
A two-rak‘ah prayer, from the first movement to the last — what your body does, what you say, and what the words actually mean.
Most people learning to pray are not worried about the theology. They are worried about standing there not knowing what comes next, or saying something wrong, or looking like they do not belong. This page exists to remove that feeling. Take one position at a time. You do not need to memorise anything today.
Why this matters
Prayer is the practice that shapes a Muslim day more than any other — five short pauses that interrupt whatever you were doing. Learning it is the single thing that most changes how connected you feel, and it is far more achievable than it looks from the outside.
What you’ll learn
- The nine positions in order, and what to do in each
- What you say, with the meaning of every word
- Why you are saying it — not just the sounds
- What to do if you cannot stand, kneel or prostrate
Sabeel — educational summary
Two things before you start
You will need to have performed wudhu first, and to face the qiblah — the direction of the Kaaba in Makkah. Any phone compass app will show you.
If a position is not physically possible for you, look for the “If you cannot do this” note on that step. Your prayer is complete either way.
The Quran establishes that prayer is obligatory; how it is performed comes through the Sunnah. That is why most steps below cite a narration rather than a verse.

Intention
النية
What to do
Stand facing the qiblah and intend in your heart which prayer you are about to perform. Nothing is said aloud.
If you cannot do this
If you cannot stand, you may sit — and if you cannot sit, you may pray lying on your side. Your prayer is complete either way.
Hadith
Narrated by `Imran bin Husain
I had piles, so I asked the Prophet (ﷺ) about the prayer. He said, "Pray while standing and if you can't, pray while sitting and if you cannot do even that, then pray Lying on your side

Hadith
Narrated by Rifa'ah ibn Rafi'
A man entered the mosque...... He then narrated the tradition like the one narrated in (No.855). This version is as follows: The Prophet (ﷺ) said: The prayer of anyone is not perfect unless he performs ablution perfectly; he should then utter the takbir, and praise Allah, the Exalted, and admire Him; he should then recite the Qur'an as much as he desires. He should then say: "Allah is Most Great". Next he should bow so that all his joints return to their proper places. Then he should say: "Allah listens to the one who praises Him", and stand erect. He should then say:"Allah is most great," and should prostrate himself so that all his joints are completely at rest. Then he should say: "Allah is most great"; he should raise his head (at the end of prostration) till he sits erect. Then he should say: "Allah is most great"; then he should prostrate himself till all his joints return to their proper places. Then he should raise his head and say the takbir. When he does so, then his prayer is completed

At-taḥiyyātu lillāhi wa-ṣ-ṣalawātu wa-ṭ-ṭayyibāt. As-salāmu ‘alayka ayyuhā-n-nabiyyu wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh. As-salāmu ‘alaynā wa ‘alā ‘ibādillāhi-ṣ-ṣāliḥīn. Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illā-llāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan ‘abduhu wa rasūluh.
“All greetings, prayers and good things belong to Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.”
Written here as it is recited. The narration establishing it is cited below.
Why am I saying this?
The prayer ends by returning to where Islam begins: the testimony of faith. Notice the order — greeting, then peace for the Prophet ﷺ, then peace for yourself and every righteous servant of Allah, and only then the declaration. You are placed inside a community before you speak as an individual.

You leave the prayer the way you would leave any gathering — by greeting those around you with peace. Even alone, the prayer ends outward, not inward.

Hadith
Narrated by Malik
We came to the Prophet (ﷺ) and stayed with him for twenty days and nights. We were all young and of about the same age. The Prophet (ﷺ) was very kind and merciful. When he realized our longing for our families, he asked about our homes and the people there and we told him. Then he asked us to go back to our families and stay with them and teach them (the religion) and to order them to do good things. He also mentioned some other things which I have (remembered or [??] ) forgotten. The Prophet (ﷺ) then added, "Pray as you have seen me praying and when it is the time for the prayer one of you should pronounce the Adhan and the oldest of you should lead the prayer

That is one rak‘ah
Steps 3 to 7 — standing, bowing, rising, prostrating, sitting, prostrating again — are one rak‘ah. For a two-rak‘ah prayer such as Fajr, stand up after the second prostration and repeat them once more. The final sitting and the salam come at the end of the last rak‘ah only.
Scholarly differences
The steps above follow one valid, widely accepted method. On some points the four Sunni schools reached different conclusions. All are accepted positions within mainstream Sunni scholarship — none is presented here as correct and the others wrong. This section is optional reading.
Where are the hands placed while standing?
Hanafi
Below the navel for men; on the chest for women.
Shafi'i
Below the chest and above the navel.
Hanbali
Below the navel is reported, as is above it.
Maliki
Letting the hands hang at the sides is reported as the position in obligatory prayers, and placing them is also permitted.
Does someone praying behind an imam recite Al-Fatihah themselves?
Shafi'i
Yes — Al-Fatihah is recited by every worshipper in every rak‘ah.
Hanafi
No — the imam’s recitation counts for those behind him, and they listen rather than recite.
Maliki · Hanbali
It is recited in the quiet prayers; in the aloud prayers the worshipper listens.
How is the finger held during the tashahhud?
Hanafi
Raised at the testimony of faith, then lowered.
Shafi'i
Raised once at the testimony and held still.
Maliki
Moved gently from side to side throughout.
Hanbali
Raised each time the name of Allah is mentioned.
