What breaks wudhu

Once you have wudhu, it stays valid until something breaks it. There are fewer of those than people often assume — and the section further down on what does not break it may be the more useful half of this page.

Agreed upon by all four schools

  • Anything leaving the front or back passage

Urine, stool and wind. This is the most common reason wudhu needs to be renewed, and all four schools agree on it.

    Quran

O you who have believed, when you rise to [perform] prayer, wash your faces and your forearms to the elbows and wipe over your heads and wash your feet to the ankles. And if you are in a state of janābah, then purify yourselves. But if you are ill or on a journey or one of you comes from the place of relieving himself or you have contacted women and do not find water, then seek clean earth and wipe over your faces and hands with it. Allāh does not intend to make difficulty for you, but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you that you may be grateful.

    Hadith

    Narrated by Abu Huraira

Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said, "The prayer of a person who does Hadath (passes urine, stool or wind) is not accepted till he performs the ablution." A person from Hadaramout asked Abu Huraira, "What is 'Hadath'?" Abu Huraira replied, " 'Hadath' means the passing of wind

  • Deep sleep

Sleep deep enough that you would not notice something leaving you. Dozing lightly while seated and still aware of your surroundings is not the same thing.

    0

All four schools agree on this ruling. The note below concerns how scholars graded one particular narration — not whether this breaks wudhu.

  • Loss of consciousness

Fainting, intoxication, or anaesthesia — anything that takes away awareness more completely than sleep does.

All four schools agree on this ruling. The note below concerns how scholars graded one particular narration — not whether this breaks wudhu.

Where the schools differ

These are long-standing differences among accepted schools, not weak or fringe positions. If you follow a particular madhhab, follow it here. If you do not, any of these is a valid position to act on.

  • Touching the private parts directly

    Schools differ

Touching the private parts with the bare hand, without a barrier.

Two authentic narrations point in different directions, and the schools weighed them differently. See the section below.

    Hadith

Narrated by Busrah daughter of Safwan

Abdullah ibn AbuBakr reported that he heard Urwah say: I entered upon Marwan ibn al-Hakam. We mentioned things that render the ablution void. Marwan said: Does it become void by touching the penis? Urwah replied: This I do not know. Marwan said: Busrah daughter of Safwan reported to me that she heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: He who touches his penis should perform ablution

    Hadith

    Narrated by Jabir ibn Abdullah

We proceeded in the company of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) for the battle of Dhat ar-Riqa. One of the Muslims killed the wife of one of the unbelievers. He (the husband of the woman killed) took an oath saying: I shall not rest until I kill one of the companions of Muhammad. He went out following the footsteps of the Prophet (ﷺ). The Prophet (ﷺ) encamped at a certain place. He said: Who will keep a watch on us? A person from the Muhajirun (Emigrants) and another from the Ansar (Helpers) responded. He said: Go to the mouth of the mountain-pass. When they went to the mouth of the mountain-pass the man from the Muhajirun lay down while the man from the Ansar stood praying. The man (enemy) came to them. When he saw the person he realised that he was the watchman of the Muslims. He shot him with an arrow and hit the target. But he (took the arrow out and) threw it away. He (the enemy) then shot three arrows. Then he (the Muslim) bowed and prostrated and awoke his companion. When he (the enemy) perceived that they (the Muslims) had become aware of his presence, he ran away. When the man from the Muhajirun saw the (man from the Ansar) bleeding, he asked him: Glory be to Allah! Why did you not wake me up the first time when he shot at you. He replied: I was busy reciting a chapter of the Qur'an. I did not like to leave it

What does not break wudhu

People far more often repeat wudhu when they did not need to than skip it when they did. If one of these has been worrying you, it should not.

  • Being unsure whether you broke wudhu

If you had wudhu and are now uncertain, you still have it. The Prophet ﷺ was asked about exactly this and said not to leave the prayer unless you hear a sound or smell something. Certainty is not removed by doubt.

    Hadith

    Narrated by `Abbad bin Tamim

My uncle asked Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about a person who imagined to have passed wind during the prayer. Allah's Apostle replied: "He should not leave his prayers unless he hears sound or smells something

  • A small cut, a nosebleed, or a graze

According to the majority of scholars this does not break wudhu, and you can carry on praying. The Hanafi school holds that flowing blood does break it, so this one depends on the school you follow.

Sabeel — educational summary. The evidence for each position is shown in the difference section below.

  • Vomiting

According to the majority of scholars this does not break wudhu. The Hanafi school holds that a mouthful does. If you are unsure which position to follow, performing wudhu again is always safe.

    Read the difference in full

Sabeel — educational summary. The evidence for each position is shown in the difference section below.

  • Laughing outside of prayer

Does not break wudhu. There is a Hanafi position that loud laughter *during* the prayer breaks it, which is a separate matter.

Sabeel — educational summary of the positions reported in the standard fiqh literature. No primary citation is shown here yet.

  • Touching the Quran, or reciting from memory

Neither breaks wudhu. Whether wudhu is required *before* touching a mushaf is a different question, and one the schools also discuss.

Sabeel — educational summary of the positions reported in the standard fiqh literature. No primary citation is shown here yet.

  • Changing a nappy, or helping someone use the toilet

What leaves *your* body breaks *your* wudhu. Caring for someone else does not, unless your own bare hand touches your own private parts.

Sabeel — educational summary of the positions reported in the standard fiqh literature. No primary citation is shown here yet.

Scholarly differences

The steps above follow one valid, widely accepted method. On some points the four Sunni schools reached different conclusions. All are accepted positions within mainstream Sunni scholarship — none is presented here as correct and the others wrong. This section is optional reading.

Does touching the private parts break wudhu?
  • Shafi'i · Hanbali · Maliki

Yes, when touched directly with the bare hand. They follow the narration of Busrah bint Safwan, in which the Prophet ﷺ instructed a person who touches it to perform wudhu.

  • Hanafi

No. They follow the narration of Talq ibn ‘Ali, in which the Prophet ﷺ was asked about this and answered that it is only a part of a person’s own body.

Does eating camel meat break wudhu?
  • Hanbali

Yes. The narration is explicit and distinguishes camel meat from mutton, so it is taken as an ongoing ruling.

  • Hanafi · Maliki · Shafi'i

No. They understand the instruction as connected to its circumstances rather than as a permanent obligation.

Does a husband and wife touching break wudhu?
  • Shafi'i

Skin-to-skin contact between a man and a woman who could marry one another breaks wudhu, taking the Quranic word in its literal sense.

  • Maliki · Hanbali

Only contact accompanied by desire breaks it.

  • Hanafi

Ordinary touching does not break it. They understand the Quranic word as referring to sexual relations.

Does bleeding from a wound break wudhu?
  • Maliki · Shafi'i · Hanbali

No. Only what leaves the two passages breaks wudhu. They point to the sentry from the Ansar who was struck by three arrows while on watch and continued his prayer rather than break it.

  • Hanafi

Yes, when the blood flows rather than merely appears. They rely on reports about wudhu from flowing blood which Sabeel has not yet verified through its publication policy.

Does vomiting break wudhu?
  • Hanafi

A mouthful does. They rely on the narration of Abu ad-Darda, in which the Prophet ﷺ vomited and then performed wudhu, and read that as establishing a requirement.

  • Maliki · Shafi'i · Hanbali

It does not. They read the same narration as showing a recommended act, or a wudhu performed in order to pray rather than because of the vomiting.

These positions are widely reported in the standard fiqh literature. Sabeel has not yet cleared a primary citation for each one through its publication policy, so they are presented as a summary of accepted scholarly positions rather than as directly cited evidence. For anything depending on your own circumstances, please ask a qualified local scholar or imam.

Sabeel is an educational platform, not a fatwa service. Purity questions often turn on circumstances this page cannot know. For anything specific to your situation, please ask a qualified local scholar or imam.
