Practice

Learn Wudhu

The short washing performed before prayer. Once you have done it a couple of times it takes about a minute.

About 8 minNo prior knowledge needed

This is the thing that stands between most new Muslims and actually praying — not because it is difficult, but because nobody wants to get it wrong. It is genuinely simple. Four parts of the body, in order, and you are ready to pray.

Why this matters

You cannot pray without it, so learning this first removes the main obstacle to starting. It is also a small reset built into your day: before you stand in front of Allah, you stop and wash.

What you’ll learn

  • The four acts named directly in the Quran
  • The full sequence, in order, with the sunnah steps
  • The mistakes almost everyone makes at first
  • What breaks wudhu — and the many things that do not

Sabeel — educational summary

Where this comes from

Four acts are named directly in the Quran: washing the face, washing the arms to the elbows, wiping the head, and washing the feet to the ankles. All four schools agree these are obligatory. Everything else below is the established practice of the Prophet ﷺ — recommended, and worth learning, but the four above are what make it valid.

What the labels mean

Pillarركن
Without this, the act is not valid.
Obligatoryواجب
Required where it applies.
Sunnahسنة
The established practice of the Prophet ﷺ.
Recommended
Encouraged, but not required.
  1. Intention (niyyah)

    Pillarركن

Intend in your heart that you are performing wudhu to purify yourself for worship. Nothing is said aloud — the intention is in the heart.

Intention is what separates an act of worship from an ordinary wash.

    Evidence

    Hadith

    Narrated by 'Umar bin Al-Khattab

I heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) saying, "The reward of deeds depends upon the intentions and every person will get the reward according to what he has intended. So whoever emigrated for worldly benefits or for a woman to marry, his emigration was for what he emigrated for

    Common mistakes

    • Saying the intention out loud as a formula. The intention belongs in the heart.
  2. Say “Bismillah”

    Sunnahسنة

Begin by saying “Bismillah” — in the name of Allah.

    Evidence

    Hadith

    Narrated by AbuHurayrah

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: The prayer of a person who does not perform ablution is not valid, and the ablution of a person who does not mention the name of Allah (in the beginning) is not valid

Scholarly differences

The steps above follow one valid, widely accepted method. On some points the four Sunni schools reached different conclusions. All are accepted positions within mainstream Sunni scholarship — none is presented here as correct and the others wrong. This section is optional reading.

Is the intention (niyyah) a condition for wudhu to be valid?
  • Maliki · Shafi'i · Hanbali

Intention is required. Without it the washing is an ordinary wash rather than an act of worship.

  • Hanafi

Intention is strongly recommended rather than a condition of validity, since the Quranic command specifies the washing itself.

How much of the head must be wiped?
  • Hanbali · Maliki

    The whole head is wiped.

  • Hanafi

A quarter of the head is sufficient.

  • Shafi'i

Wiping any part of the head is sufficient.

Must the steps be performed in the Quranic order, without long gaps?
  • Shafi'i · Hanbali

Order and continuity are required — the steps follow the sequence given in the verse, without a long interruption.

  • Hanafi · Maliki

Order and continuity are strongly recommended rather than strictly required, though the Malikis require continuity when it is remembered.

These positions are widely reported in the standard fiqh literature. Sabeel has not yet cleared a primary citation for each one through its publication policy, so they are presented as a summary of accepted scholarly positions rather than as directly cited evidence.
