A story from the Quran

Hud

هود

A people who asked who could be stronger than them

About 6 minNo prior knowledge needed

A civilisation is given size, strength and prosperity beyond anyone around them. A man from among them tells them where it came from and asks them to be grateful. Their reply is essentially a question: who is mightier than us? The Quran lets that question stand for a moment before answering it.

Why this matters

This is the story about strength as a test rather than a reward. It is also notable for how Hud speaks — outnumbered and dismissed, he says plainly that he has placed his trust in Allah, and keeps going.

What you’ll learn

  • What ‘Ad were given, and how the Quran describes it
  • Their objection to Hud, and what they accused him of
  • The sentence Hud says when he is completely alone
  • What they mistook for good news

What this is saying

The chiefs accuse him of foolishness and of lying. He answers that there is no foolishness in him, that he is a messenger, and that he is a trustworthy adviser to them. Then he reminds them they were made successors and increased in stature. The reminder is not that they are great; it is that they were made so.

What this is saying

He tells them he has placed his trust in Allah, his Lord and theirs, and that there is no creature except that He holds it by its forelock. Then he says that if they turn away, he has conveyed what he was sent with — and that turning away harms them rather than him. He is completely outnumbered and entirely unbothered about whether he wins the argument.

Reference · Quran 46:26 — translation by Saheeh International

What this is saying

They see it as a cloud bringing rain, and are told it is what they asked to be hastened. The passage then notes that they had been given hearing, sight and hearts — and that these availed them nothing because they rejected the signs of Allah. Faculties are described as given, and as useless when turned away from what they were for.

Sabeel — educational summary

What this teaches me about Allah

The passage repeatedly frames strength, stature, hearing and sight as things given rather than possessed. Hud’s trust is placed not in an argument winning but in the One who holds every creature — which is why being outnumbered does not move him.

Sabeel — educational summary

What can we learn?

  • Their strength was real. The Quran does not deny it; it disputes who it came from.
  • Hud says plainly that turning away harms them and not him. He is not trying to win.
  • They mistook the thing coming toward them for good news, because it looked like what they wanted.
  • Hearing, sight and understanding are described as given, and as availing nothing when turned away.

Character to develop

  • Trust when outnumbered
  • Delivering a message without needing to win
  • Gratitude for capability

Sit with this

No right answers. These are for you, not for anyone else.

  • What are you relying on that you did not ultimately give yourself?
  • Have you ever mistaken something for good news because it looked like what you wanted?
  • Could you say something true to a room that disagreed with you, and then leave it there?
