A story from the Quran

Isa

عيسى

Announced before he was born, and he spoke from the cradle

About 7 minBuilds on the basics

A child is announced to a young woman before there is any child. He is described as honoured in this world and the next, and he speaks while still an infant in his mother’s arms — his first recorded words defending her against an accusation she was told not to answer. Muslims honour him deeply, and are also very precise about what he was.

Why this matters

If you have come to Islam from a Christian background, or your family has, this is the passage that matters most. It is not hostile. It honours Isa enormously — and it is exact about the one point where Islam and Christianity part.

What you’ll learn

  • How Isa is announced, and the titles the Quran gives him
  • What Muslims believe he was, stated plainly and without hostility
  • The favours listed to him, including the miracles
  • What he says when asked directly about being worshipped

The announcement

And I cure the blind [from birth] and the leper, and I give life to the dead - by permission of Allāh. And I inform you of what you eat and what you store in your houses. What this is saying

He is announced as the Messiah, Isa son of Maryam, distinguished in this world and the Hereafter and among those brought near. When Maryam asks how, given no man has touched her, the answer is that Allah creates what He wills and says to a thing be, and it is. The passage lists what he will do by permission of Allah, and ends with his own words that Allah is his Lord and her Lord, so worship Him — that is a straight path. His mission is described in his own voice.

[The Day] when Allāh will say, "O Jesus, Son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother when I supported you with the Pure Spirit [i.e., the angel Gabriel] and you spoke to the people in the cradle and in maturity; and [remember] when I taught you writing and wisdom and the Torah and the Gospel; and when you designed from clay [what was] like the form of a bird with My permission, then you breathed into it, and it became a bird with My permission; and you healed the blind [from birth] and the leper with My permission; and when you brought forth the dead with My permission; and when I restrained the Children of Israel from [killing] you when you came to them with clear proofs and those who disbelieved among them said, "This is not but obvious magic."

Reference · Quran 5:110 — translation by Saheeh International

What this is saying

Every miracle in the list carries the words by My permission. Healing, giving life to clay, speaking in the cradle — none of it is presented as his own power, and the Quran is careful to say so each time. The same verse also mentions that he was restrained from those who disbelieved when he came to them with clear proofs.

Asked directly

The passage closes with a question put to Isa himself about whether he told people to take him and his mother as gods. His answer is worth reading slowly.

If You should punish them - indeed they are Your servants; but if You forgive them - indeed it is You who is the Exalted in Might, the Wise."

Reference · Quran 5:118 — translation by Saheeh International

What this is saying

He answers that it is not for him to say what he has no right to say, and that if he had said it, Allah would have known it. He states that he told them only what he was commanded — to worship Allah, his Lord and theirs. Then, speaking about the people, he says that if Allah punishes them they are His servants, and if He forgives them He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise. Even at that moment he does not ask for their condemnation.

What this teaches me about Allah

Every miracle in the passage is attributed to permission rather than to power residing in Isa. The Quran honours him as highly as almost anyone in it while being exact that he is a servant and a messenger — and it makes that point through his own words rather than by argument.

Sabeel — educational summary

What can we learn?

  • Muslims honour Isa as a prophet and messenger, and honour his mother greatly.
  • The Quran states that Allah creates by command, which is how the birth is answered without difficulty.
  • Each miracle carries the phrase by My permission — the point is made repeatedly and deliberately.
  • Asked about being worshipped, his answer leaves the matter of forgiveness entirely to Allah.

Character to develop

  • Clarity without hostility
  • Attributing ability to its source
  • Restraint when judging others

Sit with this

No right answers. These are for you, not for anyone else.

  • Is there a conversation about faith with your family that you have been dreading?
  • How do you speak about a disagreement in belief with someone you love?
  • When you do something well, whose permission and provision made it possible?
